About Us

Antler Hollow is the ranch and residence of Jeff and Bonnie Cox. Lifetime horse and dog people, Jeff and Bonnie literally "met on horseback" in 1989. Married in 1994, the Coxes have continued their shared passion for horses, dogs, and for Bonnie, running. (Jeff is more of a golfer).

Tutorships: a Unique Concept

Our tutorships are both a new and unique concept. Few, if any, other places offer a combination of dog or horse husbandry coupled with the graphic arts ... and rarely does one see the four industry-standard graphics concepts (layout, vector line art, rasterized photo editing, and portable document creation) offered in the same course. Mrs. Cox has had the tutoring idea for several years -- she is saddened by the influx of arts program cuts in various school settings, and hopes to make unique, creative concept learning available to those who have the desire and aptitute to pursue it. Programs can be tailored to the students' creative ideas ... they can create their portfolio projects on dogs, horses, unicorns, spiders, trains, coral reefs, or any other subject they choose. There are no limits here on one's imagination!

Tools for the Tutorships

Students will work simultaneously in both PC and Mac format laptop computers. We have two simple digital cameras for photo art, scanner, printer, clip art (royalty free) libraries, and storage media (jump drives and memory chips). We do not consider the dogs and horses tools, however. They are our instructors.

Why Dobermans? Aren't they mean? Our dogs are the last canines on the planet that will harm anyone in any way. They are family (adults and children) raised, trained, and certified. See the Doberman Link for more information on Dobermans and their service to mankind. Long-time admirers of the black-and-tan variety of dogs (Dobermans, Rottweilers, and Manchester Terriers), we wanted good-sized dogs who would help protect our property, be good companions, and be easy to train. Their slick coats also help keep the burrs and brambles at bay. We have not clipped their ears -- though the dogs are show quality, we do not intend to go that route.

How are the animals cared for? Our animals are fed only high-quality food and supplements. Regular worming and vaccinations are current. The dogs are run or walked daily, while the horses are ridden seasonally, as the weather permits. Regular baths and hoof trimming/nail grinding are done as needed . We are a herd, a pack, and a family, all at the same time.

Why such a bumpy road? Antler Hollow sits exactly 2 miles out from Millville Plains Road. The pavement stops at Antler; drivers have to navigate some rocks, ruts, and dust from time to time. The road is maintained by our good-sport neighbors who own (and donate time, wear, and diesel) their equipment. The road condition waxes and wanes ... we have to admit that it keeps the speed of cars and trucks down ... and adds to the serenity of our little hollow. Bear with us!

What do students need to bring? It is best to wear comfortable clothes: t-shirts, jeans, boots, and for riders, helmets are required. Shorts are only permitted if the student is not working with the animals. A spiral notebook for class notes is encouraged. We do not have a food service license, so bring a lunch if your class runs through the lunch hour.

Can I bring my own dog? Student dogs are permitted if they are current on vaccinations and well socialized. Students can go through the course materials with their own dogs, though the results may differ from the syllabus activities (off-leash work, obstacles). Our dogs are on- and off-leash trained for obedience and agility -- we can help you with your dog, too, to the best of our ability. If you are having problems with your dog's behavior, we encourage you to take a class with a certified trainer.

Do you have references? Professional references are available if you want more information about our history with dogs or horses. These are available upon request.
